Pharaoh Hounds
Pharaoh Hounds are very alert, keen hunters of medium size, who hunt by sight as well as by scenting. They possess excellent hearing, and can be very affectionate and playful with their family, making an excellent watchdog. They are generally very clean, virtually odour free, and do not require much in the way of coat care.
The breed is a very ancient one, with it's history dating back to 4,000 BC in Egypt. Statues of Anubis (God of the Underworld) found in Tutankhamen's tomb, bear a striking resemblance to the modern Pharaoh Hound, and it appears that hounds were closely associated with early Egyptian rulers. Archaeologists have been able to ascertain with fair accuracy, details of the ancestry of the Pharaoh Hound, due to the numerous carved reliefs found in Egyptian tombs. It is also believed that the Pharaoh Hounds made their way to Malta with the early Phoenician traders of the period, and ultimately became established as the national dog of that country. As a breed, they have remained virtually unchanged for centuries.
